SEASECS will hold its annual meeting on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, SC, with hotel accommodations at the Hampton Inn in Traveler's Rest

A second block of rooms has been reserved at the Best Western in Travelers Rest, SC located at 110 Hawking Rd., Travelers Rest, SC 29690. Reservation / hotel number: (864)834-7040. Each participant should call and make the reservation themselves. Remember to reference the room block, which is entitled, "Furman SEASECS". The rates are $129.99 before taxes and fees. N.B. no changes can be made to your reservations after January 28, 2024.

The theme for the meeting is “Ties that Bind: Reflections on the Past and Future of Eighteenth-Century Studies.” Plenary speakers will be Carolyn Day, Associate Professor of History at Furman University and author of Consumptive Chic: A History of Beauty, Fashion and Disease (2017) and LeAnne Howe, Eidson Distinguished Professor at the University of Georgia and member of the Choctaw Nation.

Special events include:

  • Seeking Abraham Tour” of Furman Campus, exploring Furman’s historical connection to slavery.

  • Special Collections (African-American lives and biography from the 18th century to the present; a large collection of courtesy books, conduct manuals, and etiquette books, both British and American, from late 18th century to the present; French fairy tales from the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly the works of Madame d'Aulnoy; works of Voltaire and his circle)

  • An organized ride on the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

  • French Revolution micro-game. Reacting to the Past (RTTP) is a role-playing pedagogy used at over 500 colleges and universities, in numerous disciplines, including eighteenth-century studies. Instructors using RTTP report enhanced student engagement and an enlivened classroom. To get a taste of this pedagogy, come and play a session of Rousseau, Burke and Revolution in France, 1791 (Jennifer Popiel, Gary Kates and Mark Carnes, Norton 2015). No preparation required.
